Reviewer Controls

This section describes all of the actions that may be performed with the Test Reviewer.

Reviewer Summary

The .tra files created by the Test Recorder are opened in the Test Reviewer application for analysis. The reviewer can step through each mouse click or key press made by the user and see what the user saw while performing the activity.

The .tra files may be archived as proof of test execution, attached to issues in an issue tracker or emailed to others.

Some organizations choose to export the .tra contents to a PDF file and archive that.

Event History List

The Event History List shows all of the recorded events.

Selecting a specific event will change the right hand panel to show the screen image(s) captured when the event occurred.

Client Details Panel

The Client Details Panel shows information gathered on the computer that created the recording. Information captured includes:

  • Operating system

  • Memory installed / available

  • CPU count

  • Computer and User names

  • Which Test Evidence capture option was used

  • Version of the Test Recorder App

  • Comments supplied by the user after the recording

Display Panel

The Display Panel shows a tab for each display that was captured in the open .tra file.

The tabs may be dragged to show multiple screens at the same time or even outside of the application to view full screen.

Ribbon Menu

Recordings Panel

Allows the user to open and close .tra archives.

Event Navigation Panel

The Event Navigation ribbon control panel may be used to filter the Event History List. Only those events whose type matches the checked boxes will be shown.

The video recorder type controls may be used to navgate through the events.

Screen Display Panel

The mouse cursor section determines how the location of the mouse is shown on the screen images:

  • None.

    No indicator is shown.

  • Target.

A “cross hair” circle shows the location of the mouse cursor.

  • Target and Text.

As well as the target a description of the mouse event is shown.

The Notes button turns on or off the display of any user entered notes.

Export Panel

The Export panel has various ways of extracting information from a recording.

  • Bulk Convert

Enables a set of .tra files to be converted to PDF or Word documents.

  • Export to File

Exports a copy of the currently open .tra file to a PDF or Word document.

  • Event Selection

Provides short cut options to select, clear or toggle the selection status of the events in the Event History List.

There is an option in the Export dialog to export all the events or only the selected subset.

  • Copy Screen

Puts a copy of the current display image into the clipboard.

Miscellaneous Panel

The License button opens the license manager. See Applying a License

The About button shows details of the application.

Exporting a Recording

The Export Archive dialog is shown when a recording is to be exported.

Export As

Specifies the output type, one of PDF, Word (docx) or Rich Text (rtf).

Page Size

Sets the page size of the exported document. Defaults to the page size for the computer’s default printer. You may also specify whether the page is in portrait or landscape. Landscape is the default.

There must be a default printer setup for the computer, even if it is just a basic write to PDF one.

Mouse Cursor

Determines if, and how, the mouse location is shown on the exported screen images. The options are the same as those for the reviewer app.

Collapse Text

This option is used to reduce the number of pages when there is a lot of typing in a recording.

If Collapse Text is not checked then each key press creates a separate page in the exported document.

If Collapse Text is checked then a run of keys will be presented in one page, with the image shown corresponding to the last character typed.

If the export logic determines that the user has entered a command using the keys, e.g. Ctrl+V for pasting the clipboard, then the command will be on a separate page.

This logic may not always be 100% accurate.

Export Selected Events Only

If this option is checked then only those events that are checked in the Event History List will be exported to the document.

Text to be embedded in the exported document. This text is shown on the cover page.

Save File To

The name and location of the exported file.

The default is to write the exported file to the same folder as the .tra file, retaining the same filename (but not extension) as the original file.
